Group Therapy
One of the most effective forms of psychotherapy offered at Spokane Heights Detox is group therapy. Overseen by our staff of mental health professionals, group therapy involves a small group of individuals with similar addiction issues working together in a therapeutic setting. This therapy format promotes peer support, accountability, and social interaction, all of which are essential for recovery.
Often used alongside CBT-based individual therapy, during group therapy, our guests discover, analyze, and overcome their negative thoughts and actions as they bond and empathize with fellow guests. Our groups encourage guests to make self-discoveries as they build social relationships and establish a sober peer network. We help establish an inviting, accepting, and productive environment for recovery.

What Is Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which one or more therapists work with a small group of individuals with similar issues with drugs, alcohol, or their mental health. Groups may be composed of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences but who share common concerns. The composition can vary based on the type of group therapy and the specific goals of the sessions.
Participants in group therapy interact with each other, sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The group setting provides an opportunity for members to offer support, insights, and feedback to one another. Group therapy sessions often involve specific therapeutic techniques designed to address the needs of the individuals in the group. These may include cognitive-behavioral exercises, role-playing, psychodrama, or other interactive activities.
Group therapy can be used for various purposes, such as addressing specific mental health issues, improving interpersonal skills, building self-esteem, and enhancing social support networks. It is a widely used and effective therapeutic approach, offering unique benefits that may complement or surpass individual therapy in certain situations.

What To Expect During Group Therapy?
Attending a group therapy session can be a valuable and rewarding experience. During group therapy, our trained and experienced group leaders guide participants in discussions and activities to promote healing and growth. Our group facilitators establish a supportive and accepting environment that promotes open and honest communication.
While attending our residential treatment program, guests identify and process difficult feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. This helps to establish new patterns of thinking. As guests engage in the group session, they are encouraged to share as much as they are comfortable discussing with their peers. In sharing their struggles with others, they open themselves up to new ideas, perspectives, and solutions.
Group therapy sessions are designed to be supportive and non-judgmental. The facilitator and group members typically create an environment where individuals feel safe to share their thoughts and experiences. In the beginning, there may be introductions and icebreaker activities to help participants get to know each other. This can include sharing a bit about oneself, reasons for attending, and personal goals.
The importance of maintaining confidentiality within the group is usually emphasized. Participants are encouraged to respect each other’s privacy and keep the information shared during the session confidential. Depending on the type of group therapy, the facilitator may incorporate various therapeutic techniques such as role-playing, cognitive-behavioral exercises, or guided discussions to address specific issues.
How Can Group Therapy Help In Recovery?
Group therapy can play a crucial role in the recovery process by providing individuals with a supportive and structured environment where they can address various aspects of their addiction. Here are several ways in which group therapy can be beneficial in the recovery journey:
- Shared Understanding: Group therapy offers a space where individuals can connect with others who are experiencing similar challenges. This shared understanding can help reduce feelings of isolation and provide a sense of belonging.
- Peer Support: Group members often form a supportive community. Sharing successes, setbacks, and coping strategies with peers can provide encouragement, motivation, and a sense of accountability.
- Normalization of Experiences: Participants in group therapy often discover that their experiences and struggles are not unique. This normalization can alleviate feelings of shame and guilt, fostering a more open and accepting attitude toward one's journey in recovery.
- Feedback and Perspective: Group members can offer valuable feedback and different perspectives on shared issues. Hearing diverse viewpoints can broaden one's understanding of their own challenges and potential solutions.
- Social Skills Development: For some individuals, addiction can lead to social isolation and impaired interpersonal skills. Group therapy provides a safe environment to practice and improve social skills, fostering healthier connections with others.
- Coping Strategies: Group therapy introduces participants to a variety of coping strategies for dealing with stress, triggers, and cravings. Members can share what has worked for them, providing practical insights and tools for managing the challenges of recovery.
- Accountability: The group setting creates a sense of accountability. Knowing that others are invested in their recovery can motivate individuals to stay committed to their goals and resist the urge to relapse.
- Long-Term Support: The connections formed in group therapy can extend beyond the formal treatment period, creating a network of ongoing support that individuals can rely on during the challenges of long-term recovery.
While individual therapy is valuable, group therapy adds a unique dimension by leveraging the power of shared experience and mutual support. It is often an integral part of comprehensive addiction treatment programs, contributing to a more holistic and effective approach to recovery.
